Red Sea — Which spot to choose?
5 options from north to south, from mass tourism to off the beaten path
After 8 days of temples and cruising, the Red Sea is the reward. Water at 27°C in October, some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world, 30m+ visibility. The question is: which one?

Hurghada
The mass tourism beach resort
The largest Red Sea resort town. Kilometers of all-inclusive resorts, Russian/German clientele, concrete promenades. Coastal reefs are damaged by overtourism — you need a boat to reach the good spots (Giftun Islands). 'Egyptian Benidorm' vibes.
Family wanting a mega-resort with waterslides who doesn't care about snorkeling quality
Soma Bay
The luxury compromise between Hurghada and Safaga
A private peninsula between Hurghada and Safaga. A few upscale resorts isolated from Hurghada's chaos. The house reef is one of the best in the northern area — accessible via a 420m jetty. World-class kitesurf and windsurf spot. Thalasso, golf. Classier than Safaga, calmer than Hurghada.
Family wanting calm + good snorkeling + water sports without the chaos of Hurghada
Safaga
The sleepy port town for kitesurfers
An authentic port village with zero tourist frills. The best reefs (Panorama Reef, Tobia Arbaa — the '7 Pillars') are by boat, not from the beach. World-class flat water kitesurf spot. Therapeutic black sand beaches. The Salem Express wreck (one of the most moving dive sites in the world) is nearby. Aging hotels but raw charm.
Kitesurfers, experienced divers, people escaping resorts. Less suited for beginner family snorkeling.
El Quseir
The ancient village between two worlds
The oldest port in Egypt — an ancient village with Ottoman alleyways, a fort, local cafés. Tucked between Safaga and Marsa Alam, it combines the best of both: pristine reefs accessible from the beach + authenticity of a real village + a few quality hotels (Mövenpick, eco-lodges). The Mövenpick house reef is considered one of the most beautiful in the Red Sea.
Off-the-beaten-path family wanting an excellent house reef + a real village + peace and quiet. The perfect compromise.
Marsa Alam
Snorkeling paradise — dolphins and dugongs
The most pristine reefs on the Egyptian Red Sea coast. Almost every hotel has a house reef accessible by jetty — put on a mask and you're on the coral. Unique experiences: swimming with wild dolphins at Sataya Reef ('Dolphin House'), seeing dugongs and sea turtles at Abu Dabbab Bay. The next level for snorkeling. But: no direct flight to Lyon, and becoming increasingly touristy.
Family wanting THE best snorkeling in Egypt + unique wildlife experiences (dolphins, dugongs). Accepts the logistics compromise on flights.
